The "Dad Bod": Disease isn't trendy.

JUST IN TIME FOR FATHER'S DAY, here's an article Dear Ol' Dad needs to read packed with wisdom and science from your resident Lifestyle Interventionist, Coach Heather..

.

The "Dad Bod" is a new trending term to describe men who accumulate their fat in their abdomen, causing a "Robust" appearance, but are seemingly in good physical shape everywhere else on their body . Some often reference it as their "food baby", carrying a sense of pride about how they "made" their babies with poor or overindulgent food choices. One thing is for sure, though, that your "food baby" is NO bundle of joy, but instead a bundle of pure health disasters.

.

Research studies conducted at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public health & The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles compared the use of BMI Scale, BVI (body volume index) and CT Imaging to demonstrate the relationships between high visceral fat (organ fat that causes the Dad Bod appearance) and oncology (cancer) related illnesses.

.

Here are a few statements from the interview article from www.medpagetoday.com :

.

"Higher concentrations of visceral and thigh fat increased the odds of aggressive or fatal prostate cancer by 30%-40% as compared with leaner men. The prostate cancer risk associated with increased visceral fat accumulation carried over to men who had a lower BMI," reported Barbra A. Dickerman, PhD, of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues. -Charles Bankhead, MedPage Today. Read full article here.

.

"The findings added to and extended knowledge about the relationship between obesity and prostate cancer, according to authors of a related editorial. However, Celina H. Shirazipour, PhD, and Stephen J. Freedland, MD, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, noted a couple of factors that might limit the generalizability of the results: use of a median BMI of 27, which encompassed both normal-weight and overweight men; and the observation that fat accumulation in more than one body area was associated with advanced prostate cancer, supporting existing evidence linking body fatness, irrespective of location, to the risk of advanced prostate cancer." -Charles Bankhead, MedPage Today.

.

AND THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE DANG INTERVIEW:

"The findings from [the] research, in addition to existing evidence on obesity and prostate cancer, highlight the need to examine lifestyle interventions that target fat loss in promoting optimal prostate cancer outcomes," they wrote. -Charles Bankhead, MedPage Today.

.

For those of you who DON'T KNOW, Lifestyle Interventions are MY JAM! I LOVE teaching our clients about their individual needs through the scientific data provided from our screening assessments! What I love MOST OF ALL, is watching their TRANSFORMATIONS as they use the data and the lifestyle tools I teach them to change their health for the better. Watching the little light bulbs in their heads come on as they realize they are no longer in the dark when it comes to addressing their health and they no longer have to rely on fad diets and aggressive methods to reach their goals. THAT is PRICELESS.

.

At Live Lean Rx FL, we utilize the DXA Scan to screen for this metabolically active disaster called "Visceral Fat" that can leave men [ and women] open to nasty secondary illnesses or related cancers.

.

While the study referenced above utilized a CT scanner, which provides a higher resolution but also a higher radiation dose, our DXA scanner yields 99% accuracy and a fraction of the dose of the CT Scan.

.

So, instead of getting Dad another set of power tools this Father's Day, how about getting him a Gift Card to come see us to learn some LIFESTYLE tools to keep him healthy long-term?
